Seated Four-Armed Ganesha

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Seated Four-Armed Ganesha by an unknown artist. The statue depicts a bronze sculpture of Ganesha, the Hindu deity with an elephant head. The statue shows Ganesha seated on a round base with a flat top and a decorative edge. Ganesha sits cross-legged, with his right leg tucked under his left. He has four arms; the front right arm is bent at the elbow with the hand resting on his knee, the front left arm is straight down and appears to be holding a large ball or pot against his body. The back right arm is bent at the elbow and holds an object, possibly a tool, and the back left arm is bent at the elbow with the hand grasping a curved object. The elephant head has a large trunk that curves to the right. The statue has a brown patina with some purple undertones and appears to be made of bronze. The background is a gradient of light brown to dark brown.
