Boulder with three figures

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Boulder with three figures by unknown artist. A large boulder made of rough, light brown stone. The boulder has a hole on the left side with jagged edges. A carved piece of smooth, pale yellow stone is inside the hole, protruding out the right side. The carved stone depicts three humanoid figures. The figure furthest on the right is largely obscured by the two figures to the left. The figure on the left appears to be sitting on the boulder. The middle figure seems to be sitting on the lap of the figure on the left. The background is dark at the top and lightens to white at the bottom. A shadow is visible beneath the boulder.
