Snuff bottle with Buddhist emblems

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Red snuff bottle with domed lid. The body and lid are made of carved cinnabar lacquer. A gold band encircles the base and another the bottom of the neck. The bulbous body of the bottle is densely carved with a variety of Buddhist symbols including a pair of peacocks. The domed lid is also carved. A band of Greek key pattern in a white material encircles the neck of the bottle, below a band of scrolling foliage. The background is dark at the top, fading to light gray at the bottom.
