The Battle of Yashima, from The Tale of the Heike (Heike monogatari)

Tosa School

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The artwork depicts a large, gold-colored scene divided into sections by thin lines. A green landmass with trees and a white and brown building is on the top left. Below and to the right of the landmass is a large body of dark blue water. The water and land are filled with people on horseback and in boats, some carrying flags. The people wear traditional Japanese armor and clothing. The artwork has a dark brown border with a gold stripe along the inside edge. The gold background has a subtle sheen, and the entire piece appears to be painted on a material that resembles folding screens.
