Torii Kiyonaga

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Two panels with a total of seven women in traditional Japanese clothing, specifically kimonos, standing or sitting on a platform beside a body of water. The women wear various coloured kimonos including green, brown, black, white with blue spots, red with white stripes and black with gold patterns. The kimonos have many designs such as spots, stripes and floral patterns. The women to the left panel have hair styled up with headbands and wear geta-style sandals. One woman sits on a low wooden platform while another woman on the left panel holds a round white fan. Two women in the right panel hold round black and white fans. In the background, there are buildings and a bridge spanning the body of water. The sky appears to be twilight or evening with a grey tone. The Sumida River is visible.
