Alcove ornament
The sculpture depicts a grotesque face carved into a rocky alcove ornament. The face has a large nose, thick lips, and a prominent mustache. Two large ears protrude from the sides of the head. The face is surrounded by carved foliage and sea creatures. A scale is printed along the bottom. The text at the bottom reads "THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART 1923".
