White Herons

Maruyama Ōkyo 円山応挙

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image has a beige background. A black border with gold floral designs is on the top and bottom. Two white herons are centered, one in front and one behind. The herons have their long necks bent down. The front heron's neck is parallel to the bottom edge. The back heron's neck is pointed down and to the right. Both have black eyes, and thin black lines for legs. The back heron has a black line for a beak; it is not visible on the front heron. The back heron's wings are spread up and back. The front heron's wings are folded. Black lines indicate feathers on the wings. Japanese text and a red square stamp are on the bottom right.
