Food Cup (Choku) with Gourds and Stripes

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a cylindrical ceramic cup with a blue and white glaze. The cup is white on the inside and has a small foot at the bottom. The exterior of the cup is blue with white abstract shapes resembling gourds or squash. The shapes are irregular and vary in size. They are arranged randomly around the cup. There are vertical white lines running down the cup, between the shapes. A small brown spot is visible on the top edge of the cup. The background is a gradient from dark gray at the top to light gray at the bottom. The cup casts a shadow on the surface below it.
