Foxes Meeting at Oji

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a nighttime scene with a large tree on the left and a group of foxes gathered around its base. The tree has a thick trunk and many branches, some of which are bare while others have green leaves. The foxes are orange and appear to be gathered around a pile of hay or a similar object. They are standing on a grassy area. The background features a starry sky that transitions from dark blue at the top to greenish-blue towards the horizon. There are two red rectangles with black Japanese writing on the right side of the image and a small orange rectangle with Japanese writing and a picture in the top-right corner. A beige border surrounds the image, with additional Japanese writing on the left side.
