Two Young Ladies at Shore; One Pointing

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts two young women. The woman on the left is kneeling on one knee; her right leg is bent and tucked under her. She wears a light-colored kimono with a dark patterned sash around her waist. Her right arm points to the left, and her head is tilted up to look in the same direction. The woman on the right stands with her body facing slightly left; she wears a blue kimono with a wide orange sash and a head covering. She holds a staff with both hands raised up near her shoulder. The background features a body of water, possibly a bay or lake, with a mountain range behind it. The mountain on the right is snow-capped and conical in shape. A small island or peninsula juts out into the water on the left. The sky above appears light and even. The women appear to be on a low wall or ledge overlooking the water; the wall has an uneven surface with decorative edging. The entire image has a beige background with some darker spots and lines indicating age. Japanese characters are written vertically along the left edge.
