Scene from a Modified Soga Play

Torii Kiyomasu I

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a traditional Japanese woodblock print, possibly an ukiyo-e, showing two people wearing green patterned kimonos. The background shows a room interior with a slanted roof and shoji screens. There are flowers on the left side of the image. A table and basket are on the bottom right. The person on the left sits on the floor with one leg tucked under the other. Their kimono has designs including a mask. A book sits on their lap and their left arm rests on a low table. The person on the right largely obscures the seated person. They stand in a dynamic pose to the right and behind the seated person, holding a round lantern. Their kimono has a circular design on the sleeve. The background has a lattice pattern on the roof and a shoji screen. Kanji characters appear on the right and bottom center.
