Preparations for the New Year, from Spring Rain Surimono Album (Harusame surimono-jō, vol. 1)

Totoya Hokkei

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Colorful Japanese woodblock print depicts two men working on a floor. The man on the left wears a brown top and checkered pants, bending over to scoop substance from a bowl with a large wooden spoon. A large rectangular piece of paper lies on the floor beside him, and he appears to be applying the substance to it. The man on the right wears a striped shirt and light pants, standing with his right leg bent and left leg straight, holding up a large black sheet with three horizontal white stripes. He appears to be stretching or hanging the sheet. In the background, there are green shutters on the right, and a tiled floor with a doorway leading to another room. Japanese characters are written in black ink on the left side of the image. The print has a beige background with a small red seal in the bottom-right corner and the number "1948" at the bottom center.
