Group before the Echigo-ya Dry-goods Shop on New Year's Day

Torii Kiyonaga

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Colorful woodblock print depicting a scene of people outside a shop. The group consists of both adults and children. Two adults and a child are on one side, and one adult is on the other. The adults are dressed in traditional Japanese clothing with long sleeves and some wear traditional Japanese hats. Two of the adults on one side are looking at an object held by the adult on the other side. A child on the same side as the adult holding the object looks at it. Another child stands beside him. The shop's exterior is visible with a roof overhang, and various items hang from it. The shop's facade features a large wall with a white circular symbol on it. The wall also has several rectangular pieces of fabric with Japanese characters hanging from it. A table with items on it is to the right of the man on the right side. The print's color palette includes shades of brown, green, orange, and beige. The style of the print suggests it is a traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print.
