Nanamaro and His Followers Looking at the Moon in China

Kubo Shunman

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a traditional Japanese woodblock print. The print features a group of people gathered around a low table outdoors. Six individuals are present; one man sits on a stool behind the table, and the other five people are arranged on the floor around the table. The man sitting on the stool wears a red robe; his hair is white and styled in a traditional manner. Three people to his right wear robes; two are red and one is white with a gold pattern. The two people on the left side of the man are a woman in a green robe standing and a woman in a yellow patterned robe seated. The table has a red top with a green and red patterned border and rests on four legs. The people appear to be drinking from small cups. Behind them, on the right, are large green leaves and pink flowers. The background includes a mountain range with a full moon above it. The sky is light pink. There are several lines of Japanese characters written in black and red ink at the top.
