The New Fields at Ōno in Suruga Province (Sunshū Ōno shinden), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Colorful woodblock print with a mountain in the background. The mountain is large, triangular and snowy with a blue and white sky above it. The mountain is positioned on the right side of the horizon. In the foreground, several reddish-brown horses are pulling large bundles of straw on sleds. The horses are harnessed to the sleds and are walking to the right. People in traditional Japanese clothing are leading the horses. There are several layers of blue and green in the middle ground, possibly representing water and vegetation. A line of trees is on the left side of the horizon. A narrow strip of land with vegetation separates the water from the base of the mountain. Small birds are flying over the water. The print has a beige background with a thin border around the image. Japanese characters are written vertically on the right side.
