Illustration of Foreign Residences and the Catholic Church in Yokohama (Yokohama shōkan tenshudō no zu)

Utagawa Hiroshige III

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Colorful woodblock print depicting a scene in front of a church. The church is centered, with a triangular pediment, a cross on top of a tower above, and a black iron gate. The building is made of blue-grey bricks with white mortar. The sign on the pediment reads "IVES MISSION". The church is flanked by two low buildings with brick exterior walls, black roofs, and red details. People in Western clothes walk on the sidewalk in front of the church and on the street. Two horse-drawn carriages with red frames, one on the left with passengers, and one on the right with wooden crates. The people wear Western-style clothing and some wear kimonos. A mountain, possibly Mount Fuji, appears in the background. The sky is yellowish at the top and fades to pink near the horizon.
