Woman Pursuing Sparrow

Okumura Masanobu

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a black and white drawing on aged paper of a woman chasing a sparrow. The woman, wearing a robe and a head covering, is mid-stride on the right side, reaching out with her right arm. She appears to be running after a small bird in flight. To her right is a partially drawn fence or gate, a sign post with a hanging sign, and some small plants. On the left side of the image are four figures walking in a group. A man in a head covering walks to the left, holding a long-handled tool. A woman follows, carrying a basket on her head, accompanied by a small child. A partially clothed child walks behind her. A landscape with a small fence and trees is visible in the background. The paper is yellowed and shows signs of wear around the edges. The drawing style and composition suggest it is the work "Woman Pursuing Sparrow" by Okumura Masanobu.
