Clearing Weather at Shibaura

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Woodblock print, rectangular shape, oriented horizontally. The scene depicts a large body of water with a small wave pattern, gradating from deep blue at the bottom to lighter blue and beige towards the horizon. In the foreground, a large boat with a flat bottom and raised bow is prominently featured on the right side, facing left. The boat has a tall, thin mast and appears to have a covered cabin. A wooden structure resembling a small dock or pier extends from the boat into the water. The background shows a line of trees on the left and a distant shoreline. The sky gradient transitions from pink at the top to beige and blue towards the horizon. Several lines of Japanese text are written in black ink on the top left. A red seal or stamp is visible on the right side of the print.
