Autumn Maple

Shibata Zeshin

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Autumn Maple by Shibata Zeshin: A painting of a tree with red leaves, a kettle hanging from the branch, and a rock. The tree branch extends from the right side to the upper left. It has numerous red star-shaped leaves. A kettle with a handle at the top hangs from a thin rope. The rope is wrapped around the tree branch once. The kettle appears to be made of metal and has a lid. The kettle is gray with a yellow handle and small red and white items are beneath it. There are two items hanging below the tree branch on the right side. They are attached to a single string. The upper item is brown with a loop on top. The lower item has a loop on top and several curled tendrils. The background is beige with a darker shadow behind the kettle. The shadow looks like smoke. The bottom right of the painting features an orange rock or cliff. The painting is framed with a beige border with a white filigree pattern along the top and bottom.
