Box with Design of Maple Tree and Deer

Ogata Kōrin

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular box with lid, predominantly gold on top and gray on front and sides. The gray areas appear textured and mottled. A stylized deer made of iridescent mother-of-pearl is on the front left, outlined in gold. The deer faces right and appears to be sitting down. On the right side of the deer, there is a flower or blossom also made of mother-of-pearl. The top of the box has a design that looks like tree bark. The box's front and top meet at a slight lip. The background behind the box is plain and light-colored.
