Netsuke of Boy Cutting a Gourd

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Brown wooden netsuke sculpture of a boy cutting a gourd. The gourd is on the left; it has a rounded bottom, straight sides that flare out and then curve in at the top. A small, rounded stem sits on top. The gourd has dark brown lines running vertically along its body and a shiny finish. The boy sits on the right; he wears a simple garment, and his hair is covered by a cloth. He holds a tool, possibly a knife, to the top of the gourd. He sits on his knees with his body angled to the left. The background is plain white with shadows cast by the sculpture.
