Netsuke of a Female Monkey Holding a Nut while her Baby Crawls on her Back

Masatami

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Small sculpture of two monkeys made from brown material, possibly wood or ivory. The monkey on the left sits on its haunches, leaning against the other monkey. It holds its chin with both hands, mouth open. The monkey on the right sits with legs tucked under body, back to the other monkey, and holds a nut in both hands. A smaller monkey crawls on the back of the monkey on the right. The background is light gray. The sculpture appears to be a netsuke.
