Votive Buddhist Plaque (kakebotoke)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The object is a Votive Buddhist Plaque, also known as a kakebotoke, by an unknown artist. The plaque is circular and made of dark-colored material, possibly metal or stone. The plaque has a raised border around the edge, with evenly spaced circular indentations. Inside the border, there is a raised image of a figure in a long robe. The figure has a halo around its head and appears to be standing. On either side of the figure are raised images of plants with long stems and rounded tops. The background of the plaque has a textured pattern of lines. The plaque appears to be attached to a wall or surface with two small metal brackets, one on either side. The background behind the plaque is plain and light-colored.
