Noh Costume (Chōken) with Water Plants and Mulberry Leaves

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The garment is a traditional Noh costume called Chōken. Light brown fabric with a sheen, possibly silk. The garment has a rectangular shape with straight edges and no visible seams on the front. The garment features a repeating design of water plants and mulberry leaves in a lighter shade of brown. The design consists of three identical sections, each depicting a cluster of plants and leaves emerging from wavy lines that represent water. The garment is supported by two dark brown stands, one on either side, to display it. The background is a plain gray color.
