Buddhist Vestment (Kesa) with Pattern of Flowing Water, Chrysanthemums, Fishing Nets, and Waterwheels

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular black and white textile with a repeating pattern, predominantly dark background with white and light gray swirling lines. The swirling lines resemble flowing water or waves. Scattered throughout the textile are small white and light-colored chrysanthemum flowers with five petals. A fishing net pattern is discernible in some areas. A waterwheel-like pattern appears near the bottom. The textile appears to be made of fabric, possibly silk or another smooth material. The fabric is divided into sections by darker vertical lines. Small rectangular patches of lighter material are attached to the fabric. The edges of the textile are frayed. The overall design is dense and intricate.
