Buddha Shakyamuni with disciples

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Central figure Buddha Shakyamuni sits cross-legged on a raised platform with his right hand in front of his chest and his left hand on his lap. He wears a reddish-brown robe over a white cloth wrapped around his torso. A distinctive blue topknot adorns his head. A large halo surrounds his head and back. The Buddha sits on a platform decorated with geometric patterns. The platform has a stepped base. Two smaller figures stand on either side of the platform. The figure on the left holds an object in front of their body while the figure on the right holds a bowl. Three smaller Buddhas sit on clouds above the main figure, surrounded by a blue sky with white clouds. Vines with white flowers hang down around the sitting Buddha and frame the standing figures. The painting has a wide gold border with an inner red line. The image background is white.
