Interior of a Public Bath

Utagawa Yoshiiku

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A triptych woodblock print depicting a public bath scene. The print is divided into three panels, with the left and center panels showing a large bathing area and the right panel showing a changing area. Many nude women are bathing, scrubbing, and rinsing in the left and center panels. Most have black hair tied in a bun. Some women are wrapped in towels or cloth. In the center panel, three women in patterned kimonos converse near the edge of the bathing area. In the right panel, women in kimonos stand and converse, one seated on a bench. The floor is made of wooden planks and green mats. Walls are lined with Japanese text on paper, and two red and white banners hang in the center. The print is done mostly in shades of beige and green, with accents in red and blue.
