King Siddharta Being Anointed: Folio from a Kalpasutra Manuscript

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a colorful illustration of two men and two smaller figures. The man on the left is seated on a throne-like object with a patterned design. He wears a white and brown garment, large hoop earrings, and a headpiece adorned with white and red details. A white beaded necklace hangs around his neck, and he holds his right hand up with the palm facing outward. His left hand rests on his knee. A long object, possibly a sword, is slung over his right shoulder. The man on the right sits cross-legged on the ground, wearing a pink garment with gold designs. He also sports large hoop earrings and a headpiece similar to the other man's. His hands are clasped together in his lap. Both men have dark hair and tan skin. In the bottom center of the image, two smaller figures are visible. The one on the left appears to be standing and possibly holding an object. The figure on the right seems to be seated. The background of the image features a blue field with a red border around the edge. Red and gold decorative elements are situated at the top.
