The Man with Two Trumpets

Marcantonio Raimondi

National Gallery of Art

This is a print showing several people engaged in various activities in a setting with tall trees and columns. In the center, a nude man stands, holding two long trumpets up to his mouth, extending out to the left and right. In front of him, a person with their back to us is bent over under a large stone-like block that they carry on their back. On the left, a man and woman are both holding up a large sphere with a stick extending from it that the woman holds. They are both nude, although the woman has a thin piece of fabric draped around her shoulders and arms. To the right, an old man with a long beard is dressed in a draping robe and stands next to another nude man who holds a thin staff. Columns and archways with a statue above them are visible in the background on the right, while the left shows a hilly landscape under a clear sky.
