Inkwell in the Form of a Grotesque Head

Probably French 19th Century (imitator of Roman, 2nd/3rd Century)

National Gallery of Art

The sculpture is a detailed bust of a man’s head facing slightly to the left, with prominent, slightly furrowed brows and defined cheekbones. The man has a closely shaved hairstyle, a small beard or goatee on his chin, and large, deep-set eyes. It is crafted from a dark material, with some areas in a lighter yellow color creating highlights on the face.
