The Angel of the Annunciation

Giovanni di Domenico

National Gallery of Art

This is a stained-glass artwork depicting an angel kneeling, facing the right. The angel has curly golden hair and skin in shades of pale yellow and light brown, varying between the different glass panels. They are clothed in multicolored flowing garments in shades of cream, dark red, gold, teal, dark blue, and olive green, and they are holding a tall green stem with white lilies sprouting from the top. Surrounding the angel is an ornate border with floral and geometric patterns in shades of white, red, yellow, pink, and dark blue. Their wings stretch out behind them to the left, with layers of white, red, orange, and purple feathers. At the top, there is a pale hand emerging from the floral border and pointing with two fingers towards a dove on the right, surrounded by rays of yellow light against a blue sky. The angel appears to be in a light pink room with gold trim lining the open ceiling. The top of the artwork is arched.
