Reticulated Perfume Ball

Chinese Qing Dynasty

National Gallery of Art

The sculpture features a hanging object which looks like a lantern. It is predominantly white, with floral and leaf designs in green and red. There appear to be hexagonal sections cut out of the lamp, giving it the impression of honeycomb. The lamp is held aloft by a reddish-brown wooden stand, the top of which ends in a hook shaped like a dragon's head. The stand has an elaborate base carved with swirling patterns. Hanging from the bottom of the lantern is a white tassel that hangs down to the base of the stand.
