Mother and Child

after Rembrandt van Rijn

National Gallery of Art

This drawing is a sketch of a seated woman holding a child in her arms. The woman is on the right, sitting with her body facing the left. Her knees are bent, and her arms cradle the child. She is wearing a flowing cloak that covers most of her body, and a cloth covering on her head. Her facial features are indistinct, but she looks downward at the child. The child is also wrapped in cloth, but one of their arms is visible, their hand by their mouth. The background is blank. The lines of the drawing are dark brown against beige paper.
