La famille du fermier

Clément-Pierre Marillier after Jean-Honoré Fragonard

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a group of people engaging in different activities within a historical setting. The scene includes mostly full body depictions of individuals. In the center, a woman is seated, wearing a flowing dress, and holding a baby, while another woman leans over her shoulder to look at the child. Both women have their hair tied back. The baby has curly hair and is being held gently. Another child is seen to the side, also with curly hair, near a pet or livestock animal. To the far right, through a window space, another person, wearing a hat, interacts with a goat which is peering in. The individuals are wearing long, draped garments. In this scene, a child sitting on the floor holds a small animal or object. Around them, textured stone columns, an open window with draped curtains, and rustic furnishings set a classical environment. The floor appears uneven, with cracked tiles and stray objects. A basket hangs on the wall to the right, and various household items can be seen in the background.
