Saint Martin

Israhel van Meckenem after Martin Schongauer

National Gallery of Art

The image shows two figures. One figure is standing with a slight lean to the side, his right leg straight and his left leg slightly bent. His head is turned to the right, with downcast eyes and a serene expression. He has long curly hair, a neatly groomed beard and mustache, and wears a long, flowing garment with billowing sleeves and a large robe draped over his shoulders. He holds a cloak in his right hand and a long sword pointing downward in his left hand. The other figure is seated at his feet, crouched on the ground, with an emaciated body and a distressed expression, barely clothed by a tattered piece of cloth around his waist. There is no visible jewelry on the standing figure. The background is plain with a simple, neutral texture.
