The Flagellation

German 15th Century

National Gallery of Art

This painting features three figures engaged in an activity involving ropes or cords. The central figure has a circular radiance around the head and is scantily clad. Flanking this figure are two others, one in red and the other in green with red trousers, who appear to be holding ropes or whips directed towards the central figure. The background shows an elaborately detailed architectural setting with stone or mosaic walls, arches, and floral designs, in a medieval or early Renaissance style. The predominant colors are red, green, and gold.
