Saint Valentine, Saint Stephen and Saint Maximilian

Hans Burgkmair I

National Gallery of Art

The image shows three figures standing next to each other from head to toe. The central figure is Stephanus, with curly hair and a halo, dressed in a red robe and holding a palm frond and a stone-covered disk. To Stephanus's right is Valentinus, also with a halo, wearing a mitre and a long cloak, holding a crosier. On Stephanus's left is Maximilianus, also wearing a mitre and a halo, with two fingers raised as a gesture of blessing. The figures are dressed in ecclesiastical garments of red, green, and yellow. Below them are three coats of arms with various designs, and the background features a decorative floral border at the top.
