Peasant Woman with Two Jugs

Barthel Beham

National Gallery of Art

This print shows a person depicted from head to toe, standing upright and turning towards the left. One of their arms gestures out to the left, while the other is tucked under the edge of their garment. Their face is not visible, obscured by a hood that covers almost their entire head and neck, with a small opening that shows only their nose. The individual wears a long-sleeved, buttoned coat and a long skirt or robe. Two large jugs, one on each side, stand on the ground close to their feet, and a woven basket with grass or leaves is seen near the jug on the left. The background is plain, off-white paper. The artwork includes small handwritten numbers "1524" at the top left corner.
