Eve Standing

Sebald Beham

National Gallery of Art

This print depicts a nude woman standing upright. She is in the center of the print, her body facing us and her head turned to the left, with her left hand holding an apple to her chest and her right hand holding a large snake that coils between her legs and around her ankles. She has pale skin and long, wavy hair that cascades down her left shoulder. In the top left corner is a leafy tree with more apples hanging from it. Behind her feet is a large lion, its head and paws near the lower right corner. The background is mostly made of dark crosshatched lines, with a patch of sky visible near the bottom left corner, showing more trees and a path leading away. Inscriptions, including the date “1523, can be seen in the upper right corner. The background of the print is beige paper."
