The Mecoo & Kisbee Kishee Monkeys

William Blake after John Gabriel Stedman

National Gallery of Art

This print shows four monkeys in and around a tree. The tree is on the left, with long vines or ropes hanging from its branches. Two monkeys sit on the top branches, while another stands on one of the hanging vines, a baby monkey clinging to its back. On the far right, a monkey is in mid-air, jumping from the large tree down towards a smaller tree in the bottom right corner. The two monkeys in the branches look almost like small lions, while the other two are smaller, with white heads and dark areas from their noses to their chins. In the background, there is a flat body of water with a small person in a long boat. Behind that are mountains and dark bushes below and an empty sky of beige paper. Below the print there is a line of text.
