Family of Negro Slaves from Loango

William Blake after John Gabriel Stedman

National Gallery of Art

This print shows two adults and two children, all with dark skin and short, curly hair. On the left is a man standing upright with a basket of fish on his head, holding a large fish. He is mostly nude except for a thin cloth around his waist. Next to him is a woman who also has a basket on her head filled with fruits and vegetables. She is smoking a pipe and holding a stick that appears to have some wool-like fibers on it. One child is hanging from a sling on her back, and another child is standing at her side. The woman has a longer cloth wrapped around her waist, but her torso is bare. In the background, there are hills, a small structure, and two small people in the distance on the left. The print is surrounded by a border of blank paper, and there is a line of text at the bottom.
