Design for a Pendant with a Winged Sea-Monster Carrying Venus Anadyomene on a Shell and a Man with an Oar

Hans Collaert the Elder

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of mythological figures on a sea creature. The drawing shows a sea creature with a dragon-like appearance, ridden by two mythological figures. One figure is standing on a large seashell holding a ribbon, while the other figure appears to be steering the creature with a stick. Above them, there is an ornamental cartouche with floral and scroll elements, and two serpentine scrolls arch towards the top. Below the sea creature, there are intricate decorative lines on a patterned or architectural base, with three bead-like forms suspended. The linework is precise, resembling a style reminiscent of Renaissance or Baroque engravings.
