John William, Duke of Saxe-Coburg

Lucas Cranach the Younger

National Gallery of Art

This print shows a man standing, facing slightly to the right, his head turning to look at us. His left arm is crossed over his body, resting on a thin sword that hangs on his left side, while his right hand is near his chest. He has pale skin, a small mustache, thin eyebrows, a long nose, and a small mouth set in a slight smile. He wears a feathered beret that covers the top of his head. He is dressed in a wide, fur-lined cloak with several layers of ruffles, a doublet, and puffed sleeves, with several chains hanging down his neck below a frilled collar. These thick clothes make his torso and upper body look very wide. On his legs, he wears short pants that end slightly below the edge of his cloak, and the rest of his legs seem to be covered by thin tights. The background behind him and ground below him are both plain beige paper, separated by a black horizontal line. The man casts a faint shadow on the ground.
