Coronation of the Virgin

Italian 18th or 19th Century

National Gallery of Art

This image is a half-circle print depicting a religious scene. In the center, two individuals are prominently displayed; both are shown from head to knees. One person sits cloaked with their head slightly bowed and covered, while the other, robed, wears a crown and is making a gesture towards the first person. Both have halos above their heads. Surrounding them are multiple small figures of angelic faces each surrounded by a halo. To the sides, kneeling figures, also with halos, can be seen. The background is filled with cloud-like shapes interspersed with celestial beings. The entire scene is rendered in an illustrative, line-based style.
