Shield of James I

Simon de Passe

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a royal coat of arms. The coat of arms is circular and prominently centered in the image. It features an intricate design with two animals positioned on either side as heraldic supporters holding up the shield. The shield is divided into four quadrants, each containing different symbols. Above the shield, a crown rests, and ornate decorative elements frame the composition. Around the oval border of the coat of arms, there is a band of Latin inscription. The entire piece is rendered with detailed engraving techniques.
