Hotel Melrose Lobby, 1880

Perkins Harnly

National Gallery of Art

This is a painting of what appears to be a hotel lobby, with the words "Hotel Melrose" at the top. The scene includes green stairs in the center with ornate banisters that are adorned with golden decorations. Behind the stairs are stained glass windows in shades of pink, purple, and blue. To the left of the stairs is an ornate black grate with doors that could suggest an elevator. The floor is covered in black and white checkers, with some green carpets over them. Scattered around the lobby are chairs and couches with floral patterns, and a table near the bottom appears to be marble with a plant in a decorative pot on top of it. There are also gold lamps with colorful floral shades and other architectural details, like green columns and arches. Gold chandeliers hang from the ceiling.
