Rooster Woodcarving

Marian Page

National Gallery of Art

The sculpture is of a rooster standing on a rounded base. It is colorfully painted with off-white and numerous small black spots on its body, a red comb, and bright red wattle and ear lobes. The material appears to be wood, evident from the grain visible on its surface and the slightly rough texture of the carving. The rooster is depicted in a stylized manner, with large yellow feet planted on the base, tail feathers fanned out behind it, and its head held high. Its yellow beak is prominent, facing forward.
