Italian Style Villa

Virginia Richards

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a villa with its garden design. The drawing is a detailed plan and elevation of an Italian-style villa and its surrounding landscape, designed by A.J. Downing in 1843. The top-left panel displays the "Plan of Ground including Parterre," featuring an octagonal garden area with paths and scattered trees leading to the villa. Below, the "Terrace Parterre" showcases a more detailed view with geometric paths outlined by floral arrangements. Above these, the "Front view of House" includes a two-story villa with classical architectural elements. Beside this, an illustration of "Prickly Acanthus" and a fountain drawing further emphasize the formal Italian theme of the estate. The whole composition is framed in a tan border and signed by V. Le Richards.
