Te Po (The Long Night)

Paul Gauguin

National Gallery of Art

The image displays fluid and curvilinear shapes with interweaving lines creating depth and movement. A large round shape resembling a sun or moon is at the top left with radiating lines. Below this form are abstract figures lying down and sitting, with simplified and elongated limbs and heads. Towards the lower right is a smaller flame-like shape. The scene suggests a night setting with shadows and dreamy figures at repose. The letters "TE PO" are inscribed into the figure.
