Man Kneeling

Ernst Barlach

National Gallery of Art

This is a sketch of a person shown from head to knees. The figure is kneeling with an upward gaze and head tilted back slightly. Facial features such as a bearded chin and relatively closed eyes are visible. The person is draped in a cloak or large garment, which covers most of the body and forms a rounded shape around the torso. The hands rest on the ground at either side, alongside bare feet. The background is plain.
